"One of the brightest new faces in pop this year"
-The Oxford Mail
British artist, Tilly Valentine, has been described as “one of the revolutions of music this year” after the run of her self-released singles.
Born and raised in Oxfordshire, Valentine moved to London aged 16 where she attended the prestigious BRIT School. It was there that she occupied the unfamiliar feeling of living independently by writing with producers over SoundCloud. She began collaborating with a young German producer, Mattis, that inspired the very start of her journey.
After graduating from The BRIT School in 2015 with a triple Distinction*, Valentine proceeded to gain a First Class Honours at The Academy of Contemporary Music. Alongside Valentine’s original music, her early journey involved performing in the backing choir for Sam Smith at Wembley Arena, and has since written with DJ Fresh alongside involvement on projects with the likes of Rod Stewart, Lewis Watson and iiola (formerly Shannon Saunders).
Valentine's self-released tracks have accumulated over half a million streams. The most recent single, 'Fit for a King', was broadcast on BBC Radio 1 with Huw Stephens, BBC Radio 1Xtra as well being premiered on BBC Introducing's 'The Hot List'. During Valentine's recent Speedy Cover live on BBC Radio 1, Nick Grimshaw referred to Valentine's vocals as "soothing" and "a beautiful arc of performance". Matt Edmonson later played the cover on his show, describing it as "soulful", with Yungblud himself referring to 'feeling like he's been to an art gallery'.
Her tracks have soothed the ears of many other tastemakers too, including Jamz Supernova who premiered her debut single 'Coins' on BBC Radio 1Xtra. Her self-directed music video for 'Coins' was awarded “Best Music Video of 2018” by Music Republic Magazine, alongside a shortlist for Best Female Artist, Best New Artist and Best Song/Songwriter.
Her soulful second single ‘Brick by Brick' broadcast on BBC Radio 6 Music continued her success with Shaun Keaveny describing Valentine’s style as “beautiful pop music”, as well as Tom Robinson who also spun the track as part of The BBC Introducing Mixtape. The tracks can be heard playing in stores such as Topman, New Look, TK Maxx, Miss Selfridge, M&S, Hotel Chocolat, Costa and more.
Although Valentine’s background is predominately jazz and trip hop influenced, Valentine’s style has been best described as "the type of quirky you can pair with a coffee or party”. Being recognised for her playful and conversational lyrics, The BRIT School alumna later collaborated with producer 'edbl' and released their co-written love song, 'Table for Two’ and 'Symmetry'.
Following her BBC Introducing live lounge, Valentine took to the stage for the third time at her hometown venue, the O2 Academy in Oxford, and later headlined upstairs at the renowned Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club with her three-piece backing band.
New music in the pipeline has set the tone to make 2020 her best year yet.
